Senator PAYNE (Tasmania) (3:25 AM) . - I should like the Minister in charge of the department to explain why the annual vote of £10,000 has been reduced to £5,000. The money has been used exclusively by the administration in providing medical attention, and generally for the welfare of the native population. It appears to me to be strange that, in view of the rapid development in New Guinea, the difficulties of the administration should be added to by a reduction in the vote.
