Senator THOMPSON (Queensland) . - I join with Senator McLachlan in suggesting that the matter be further postponed, with a view to making the conditions of the secret ballot provisions of the act less irksome than they are at present to honorable senators opposite. I believe in the secret ballot, but as I said on the second reading, under present conditions, the provisions in the act are perfectly futile. I urge the Leader of the Government in the Senate to agree to the postponement of the clause, with a view to his bringing down a proposal which would be acceptable to his own side as well as to honorable' senators of the Opposition.
