Senator E B JOHNSTON (Western Australia) . - I am advised that the bank officers' associations in the various States view the proposed repeal of section 38c with a good deal of concern. The Bank Officers Association of New South Wales is working under a very good award, which it wishes to retain. This section was inserted at the request of that association to prevent federal arbitration judges from joining State associations with federal awards, without first hearing the parties concerned. If the section is repealed State awards may be overridden by Federal awards without consideration being given to the officers concerned and without hearing their objections. If the clause is agreed to I shall submit an amendment, of which I have given notice, to safeguard the bank officers' associations in the various States.
