Senator H E ELLIOTT (VICTORIA) asked the Minister representing the Minister for Defence, upon notice -

1.   Has his attention been directed to the extreme inadequacy of the surveys of the Australian coasts, and to the fact that there are still numerous uncharted shoals on the Queensland coast in the path of shipping, that islands are wrongly charted, and that other inaccuracies prevail? If not, will he inquire as to the facts from the Naval Department?

2.   I.7i view of thu danger of loss of life arising from erroneous charts, why have the marine surveys conducted by the Naval Forces been discontinued?

3.   When is it to be expected that they will be resumed?
