Senator WALKER (New South Wales) . - I ask the leave of the Committee to amend my amendment in such a way as to overcome the objection urged by Senator Rae. There is a good deal of force in what the honorable senator said, and also in what was said by Senator Stewart. I ask leave to amend my amendment so as to make it read -

That all the words after "That" to "passengers " second occurring be left out, with a view to insert in lieu thereof the words, " a library be established to which the crew shall have access on every ship carrying a crew of twenty persons and over, the same to be subsidized by* the Commonwealth to an amount to be prescribed."

Amendment amended accordingly.
