Senator GIVENS (QUEENSLAND) asked the Vice-Presi dent of the Executive Council, upon notice -

1.   Whether, in view of the position that arose last week when the Senate had to adjourn owing to the Hansard staff not being sufficiently equipped to take a report of the proceedings, it is likely that senators will be submitted to the same inconvenience in future?

2.   Why is it that the shorthand typists at present on the staff are not being trained by being allowed to report the proceedings of Select Committees and similar work, instead of their services being utilized by the Public Service Commissioner during the parliamentary recess?

3.   Will a report be obtained from the Queensland Parliamentary reporting staff regarding the working of the system in use there whereby cadets are trained so as to enable them to step into a breach when unusual circumstances arise?
