Senator PEARCE - The answers to the honorable senator's questions are : - 1 to 3. The Commonwealth does not carry out any powellising, but has merely arranged to purchase the treated sleepers. The powellising is carried out by the Western Australian Government, which, being a Government having Australian sympathies, uses, I am informed, only Queensland molasses in the treatment of the sleepers.

Senator CHATAWAY - Can the Minister say whether there is any truth in the statement furnished to the Senate two years ago, that over 4,000 cwt. of Java molasses were used by the Western Australian Government for treating sleepers?

Senator PEARCE - I am not able to answer that question. I suggest that the honorable senator should give notice of it for to-morrow.
