Senator PEARCE (Western Australia) (Minister of Defence) . - I ask leave of the Committee to amend my request, in order to carry out the desire of the Government to prevent the cabinets imported with these instruments, and that come into competition with furniture, being admitted free. I ask leave to amend the request by adding a new sub-item -

(b)   Metal parts of gramaphones, phonographs and other talking machines when imported unassembled on and after - December, 191 1, Free.

If this request be adopted, we shall have the records free, the metal parts of the machines free, and the cabinets, that are actually furniture, dutiable at 10 and 5 per cent.

Request, by leave, amended accordingly.
