Senator PLAYFORD (South Australia) (Minister of Defence) . - I should be quite willing to agree to the course suggested by Senator Clemons if I thought it would expedite matters. But after the second reading of the British Preference Bill has been carried there may still be a long debate in Committee. The schedule is very debatable. If I had a promise that honorable senators opposite would only take a reasonable time upon the measure in Committee, I should be satisfied.

Senator Clemons - I give that promise, so far as I am concerned.

Senator PLAYFORD - If, however, there is to be a long debate in Committee, it might entail, the whole of the Monday's sitting being occupied with that business.
