Senator CLEMONS (Tasmania) . - Will the Minister inform the Committee how the various sums are to be allocated to the different States? Is there any allocation of these large items?

Senator Playford - No.

Senator CLEMONS - I take, for example, the vote of £53,040 for field artillery, guns and ammunition. Can the honorable senator say how that sum is to be divided amongst the States? The Minister must recognise that this is a very large vote, and one of the largest votes for special defence material that has ever been submitted in a similarBill.

Senator Playford - A similar vote has been passed for threeyears running.

Senator CLEMONS - I should like to know where the money is going to be spent.

Senator Mulcahy - Is it not in continuation of ageneral scheme ?

Senator CLEMONS - I should imagine so, but with respect to the very large vote for field artillery, the Minister should, I think, explain how it is to be distributed amongst the different States.

Senator Playford - I cannot say what sum will be spent on material for a particular State.

Senator CLEMONS - I should be satisfied if the Minister would explain the method he proposes to adopt for the distribution of all this material.
