Senator PLAYFORD (South Australia) (Minister of Defence) . - In the majority of instances it would be a Customs House officer who gave the information under this clause. He would ascertain, in the course of his duties, that certain imports were coming in. In the Customs Act we protect Customs House officers in this respect. So we ought to do. Ibelieve that this provision is taken from the Customs Act, and it is for the protection' of officers from, perhaps, huge combinations with great power, or individuals with great wealth, who might otherwise make matters troublesome for them.
