Senator PLAYFORD - The answers to the honorable senator's questions are as follow : -

1.   Cost of transit between Queenscliff and Melbourne for the year - £165. This amount includes guards of honour and other duties.

2.   The saving in time by sending men by steamer would be about one hour per trip, and the saving in money would be about10d. per man, but as the steamers run only five months in the year, and leave in the afternoon, the men could not all be sent by steamer.

I may inform the honorable senator that I intend to inquire into the matter, and see whether I cannot save some little expense. I have not been able to consult Captain Creswell on the point, but it appears to me that we should be able to use our own craft to bring up some of these men, and so avoid incurring any expense of this kind.
