Senator STANIFORTH SMITH (WESTERN AUSTRALIA) asked the Minister representing the PostmasterGeneral, upon notice -

1.   In calling for tenders for the British- Aus tralian Mail Contract will the Government, consider the advisability of offering longer terms than those of the present contract, and endeavour to so formulate the conditions that Australian Shipping Companies will be induced to tender?

2.   Will the Government consider the advisability of (a) calling alternate tenders, in one of which they will stipulate that the boats will be capable of conversion into fast armed cruisers in time of war; that (b) the crews shall be white British subjects, and members of the Australian Naval Reserve; and (c) the subsidy shall be apportioned between the Commonwealth Post and Telegraph Department and the Defence Department ?
