Senator PLAYFORD (South Australia) (Minister of Defence) . - The expenditure on temporary assistance last year is accounted for bv the fact that there were a number of officers whose salaries were voted in the Appropriation Act, though the positions were not filled up for a considerable portion of the year. In the meantime, the officers were paid as temporary assistants. There was, consequently, an excess on that vote. On the other hand, there was a saving of something over £600 on salaries.
