Senator STEWART (Queensland) - I rise to move that the salary of the President be reduced from £1,100 to £600, and the salary of the Chairman of Committees from £500 to £350. Last year I gave my reasons for proposing similar reductions, and perhaps it is hardly necessary to recapitulate them. In my opinion, it is extravagant on the part of the Commonwealth to pay a salary of ,£1,500 to the President of the Senate. Last year I said I was not animated by any personal feeling. I have the highest respect for both the President and the Chairman of Committees. I do not think that we could find two other senators who would fill the positions more conscientiously, with more dignity, and with greater impartiality than they do; but the salary in each case is too high. I move -

That the House of Representatives be requested to reduce the item "The President, £1,100," by j£5°°-

I hope that such honorable senators as are economically minded will support me.
