Senator STEWART (for Senator Staniforth Smith) asked the Minister representing the Minister of External Affairs, upon notice -

1.   Has the Government received any communi cation from the Secretary of State for the Colonies asking the Federal Parliament to alter the Commonwealth Immigration Restriction Act in so far as the Empire of Japan is concerned, with a view, of removing the alleged objections of Japan to the present provisions of the Act?

2.   Was not the present Act passed at the instance and desire of the then Secretary of State for the Colonies?
