Senator KEATING (TASMANIA) (Ministerwithout portfolio) - The answers to the honorable senator's questions are as follow : -

3.   The costs were, in accordance with the ordinary practice in such cases, charged against transferred expenditure in the State into which the goods were imported, which in this instance was New South Wales.

4.   No. There was no agreement by the Commonwealth to accept the decision in the case as governing any other case. It was,however, agreed, that pending the decision in the case, no proceedings need for the then present be taken in a large number of other cases. The object of this was to prevent the State Government from being prejudiced by lapse of time.'

5.   Amount of duty collected under the Tariff up to 30th September, 1905, on goods imported by the Government of New South Wales, was £194,824.
