Mr Barry Jones (LALOR, VICTORIA) - Mr Deputy Speaker,I second the amendment. There are four outstanding myths about taxation in Australia which must be dispelled. Myth No. 1-

Mr Hodges - I move:

That the question be now put.

MrDEPUTY SPEAKER (Mr Millar)Order! There is not yet a question before the House in regard to the amendment. The amendment is being seconded. I call the honourable member for Lalor.

Mr Barry Jones (LALOR, VICTORIA) - There are four outstanding myths about taxation in Australia which must be dispelled. Myth No. 1 is the idea that Australia's taxes are among the world's highest. The reality is that in comparison with other economically advanced nations, such as the members of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, Australia's taxes are at the low end of the scale. Myth No. 2 is the idea that the Fraser Government is committed to tax reduction. The reality is that tax rates are higher under the Fraser Government than under any other government in Australia's history.

Motion (by Mr Hodges) proposed:

That the honourable member be not further heard.
