Mr Barry Jones (LALOR, VICTORIA) asked the Minister for Science and the Environment, upon notice, on 22 May 1980:

(1)   Has his attention been drawn to the 4-volume report The Selective Conserver Society commissioned by the Canadian Government from the GAMMA research group of Montreal and McGill Universities and directed by Professor Kimos Valaskakis.

(2)   If not, will he have the report examined by his Department with a view to considering the appropriateness of the report's many policy recommendations to the Australian situation.

Mr Thomson - The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

Yes. The report is relevant to the consideration by my Department of a Commonwealth response to the World Conservation Strategy, which was accepted on behalf of the Commonwealth Government by the Prime Minister in Canberra on 6 March 1980.
