Mr KIRWAN (FORREST, WESTERN AUSTRALIA) - I address a question to the Minister for Shipping and Transport. Has the honourable gentleman received a report from the Bureau of Transport Economics on the comparative qualities of timber and concrete sleepers? If so, when does he expect to announce his decision on future sleeper purchases by the Commonwealth Railways? If not, when does he expect that the report will reach him and will he assure the House that a decision will be announced before the House rises for the elections?

Mr NIXON - I have received a number of representations from a wide variety of people on the question of the use of timber or concrete sleepers by the Commonwealth Railways. As the honourable gentleman suggests, this matter was referred to the Bureau of Transport Economics for report to me. The Bureau has reported to me. I expect to be taking a paper to the Government on this matter shortly and a decision will be announced after that time.
