Dr Klugman (PROSPECT, NEW SOUTH WALES) asked the Treasurer, upon notice:

(1)   What sum was claimed for education expenses by taxpayers in the last 3 financial years for which figures are available.

(2)   What was the loss to taxation revenue because of education expenses in each of those years.

Mr Snedden - The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1)   The total amounts of deductions allowed for education expenses in the income tax returns of taxable individuals tabulated for the income years 1967-68 to 1969-70 were as follows:

(2)   The estimated loss to income tax revenue resulting from allowing income tax deductions for education expenses in each of the income years from 1967-68 to 1969-70 were approximately the following amounts:

It should be noted that the above estimates represent the amounts by which revenue in respect of each of these income years would have been increased if deductions allowed for education expenses had not been allowed.
