Mr WHITLAM (WERRIWA, NEW SOUTH WALES) asked the Minister for Labour and National Service, upon notice:

Why has Australia not yet ratified international Labour Organisation Conventions No. 87 - Freedom of Association and Protection of the Right to Organise. 1948 and No. 98- Right to Organise and Collective Bargaining, 1949, to whose ratification nil States have now agreed (Hansard, 8th September 1971. page 983); 29th September. 1971. page 1710; 30th September 1971. page 1829 and 31st May 1972, page 3379).


Mr Lynch - The answer to the honourable members question is as follows:

Following normal practice prior to taking a decision on ratification of ILO Conventions, the overall situation relating to these 2 Conventions is being reviewed to confirm that all aspects of Australian law and practice are in conformity with their provisions.
