Mr JESS (LA TROBE, VICTORIA) - Can the Minister for Defence advise me whether prior to recent moratorium demonstrations Service personnel, including members of the Citizen Military Forces, were instructed not to wear uniform on such days? Were Citizen Military Forces recruiting drives to be held in shopping centres on such days cancelled? If this is correct will the Minister advise the House of the reason for such a decision, in view of the fact that an Australian soldier should be proud to wear his uniform and not be ashamed? Will the Minister assure me that such a decision, which has a lowering effect on Service morale, will not be repeated in future?

Mr FAIRBAIRN (FARRER, NEW SOUTH WALES) (Minister for Defence) - 1 have no personal knowledge of the matter which the honourable member raises. It comes within the direct and personal administration of the Minister for the Army. I will make some inquiries of him and see that the honourable member gets a reply at the earliest possible moment.
