Mr Morrison (ST GEORGE, NEW SOUTH WALES) asked the Minister for Defence, upon notice:

(1)   What was the capital expenditure on new bases within Australia for (a) the Army, (b) the Air Force, and (c) the Navy for the period 1961- 62 to 1970-71.

(2)   Where are the new bases located.

Mr Fairbairn (FARRER, NEW SOUTH WALES) (Minister for Defence) - The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1)   Capital expenditure on new bases within Australia in the period 1961-62 to 1970-71 was:


In addition to these amounts, very substantial expenditure was incurred during the period in upgrading existing bases/ establishments, including significant capital works developments to cater for new or expanded roles.

(2)   The location of the new bases is as follows: The Army -

Townsville Oakey

The Air Force -

Learmonth Tindal

The Navy -

Garden Island, Western Australia Cairns
