Mr Charles Jones asked the Minister for

Shipping and Transport upon notice:

(1)   Are all new cars covered by a manufacturer's warranty.

(2)   Do these warranties give (a) the car owner full protection against faulty workmanship and any consequences, (b) limit the manufacturer's liability and (c) seriously erode an owner's rights under common law.

Mr Nixon - The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1)   Generally speaking, yes. It is normal for new cars to be sold under warranty.

(2)   Warranties given in connection with the sale of motor vehicles contain differing conditions as between manufacturers and models of motor vehicles. As it would be necessary to undertake an examination of warranties issued by manufacturers and seek legal opinion, I am not really in a position to provide a more specific answer to this part of the question.
