Mr Daly asked the Minister for Education and Science, upon notice:

(1)   How many foreign students are at present attending Australian universities.

(2)   How many of them are (a) private and (b) assisted students.

(3)   Of those enrolled in each category, how many are of (a) European, (b) non-European and (c) mixed descent.


Mr Malcolm Fraser (WANNON, VICTORIA) - The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1)   In 1971 there were 6,199 overseas students attending Australian universities. The figure for 1972 is not yet available.

(2)   (a) 4,134, (b) 2,065. Note- These figures are preliminary.

(3)   The information to answer this part of the honourable member's question is not available as universities do not furnish separate statistics of overseas students according to whether they are European, non-European or of mixed descent.
