Mr Whitlam asked the Minister for Defence, upon notice:

On what occasions had Australian forces joined in exercises with (a) Malaysian and (b) Singaporean forces between his predecessor's answer to me on 28th November 1968 and Bersatu Padu in July 1970.


Mr Malcolm Fraser (WANNON, VICTORIA) - The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(a)   Ships of the Royal Australian Navy exercised with units of the Malaysian and Singaporean navies in April-May 1969 and May-June 1970.

(b)   The Australian Army exercised with elements of the Malaysian Army and Air Force in March 1969, and with both Malaysian and Singaporean forces in June 1970.

(c)   The Royal Australian Air Force participated in exercise with the Royal Malaysian Air Force in November 1969 and May 1970, and in naval exercises including Royal Malaysian Navy ships in July 1969, and January and June 1970. Detachments of the Royal Australian Air Force also conducted air defence exercises with the Singaporean Air Force at two monthly intervals between November 1968 and July 1970.
