Mr Hayden asked the Minister for Education and Science, upon notice:

1.   Is he able to give the estimated cost to the education departments of each of the States, the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory of training a teacher?

2.   How many teachers have left the education departments of each of the States since January 1966 of their own volition, excluding those who reached the retiring age or resigned through ill health?

3.   How many of these teachers bad service of (a) one year, (b) two years, (c) three years, (d) four years, (e) five years and (f) more than five years with their respective education departments at the time of resignation?

Mr Malcolm Fraser (WANNON, VICTORIA) - The answer to the honourable member's questions is as follows:

Teachers for Commonwealth schools in the Australian Capital Territory and for all Commonwealth schools, other than the special schools provided for aborigines in the Northern Territory, are provided by the New South Wales and South Australian education authorities respectively, under arrangements which include reimbursement by the Commonwealth of the salary costs of the teachers. The honourable member's question therefore b seeking information on matters which are the responsibility of State Ministers for Education, and not matters on which the Commonwealth Minister is responsible to the Parliament.
