Mr Webb asked the Minister for Shipping and Transport, upon notice:

1.   Has a request been received from the Australian Automobile Association that the Commonwealth Bureau of Roads Act 1964 be amended to provide that the Bureau report to the Commonwealth Parliament at least once annually?

2.   If so, what action is proposed to meet this request?

Mr Sinclair - The answers to the honourable member's questions are as follows:

1.   Yes. A verbal request lias been made to me.

2.   The main function of the Bureau of Roads is to conduct investigations and provide reports for the information and advice of the Government. Accordingly it is not appropriate for it to report directly to the Parliament. As my predecessor has previously informed the House, Parliament will be advised of the work of the Bureau when it is deemed appropriate. Already certain technical reports have been released and are available in the Parliamentary Library.
