Mr Hayden asked the Minister representing the Minister for Education and Science, upon notice:

1.   How many classes with pupils numbering (a) fewer than 25, (b) 25 to 30, (c) 31 to 35, (d) 36 to 40, (e) 41 to 45 and (f) 46 or more were there in (i) State primary and (ii) State secondary schools in each State, the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory, during each of the past five years?

2.   What percentage of the total number of classes in each of the States and Territories are represented by each of the categories (a) to (f)?

Dr Forbes - The Minister for Education and Science has supplied the following answers to the honourable member's questions:

The information asked for is not available from the published reports of the State Education Departments. The Australian Education Council, which comprises the Ministers of Education of all the States, did however provide some details in the 'Statement of Some Needs of Australian Education' and these may be of interest to the honourable member. They are as follows:



1.   One-teacher schools and special schools are omitted.

2.   Secondary school figures are based on the number enrolled for the subject of English,
