Mr Duthie e asked the Treasurer, upon notice -

1.   Will the Government consider allowing as taxation deductions monetary gifts made by citizens to their churches for the purpose of providing (a) new churches, (b) Sunday schools, (c) church halls and (d) alterations and extensions to existing church buildings?

2.   Will he consider this proposal in relation to the coming Budget as was promised when I raised the matter on the 7th October, 1959?

Mr Harold Holt - The answers to the honorable member's questions are as follows: -

1.   The question of making gifts for religious purposes deductible for income tax has received the earnest consideration of the Government on a number of occasions in conjunction with and in relation to gifts for educational purposes. These matters have been considered in their entirety as well as in special respects such as gifts specifically directed to the provision of buildings for use as churches, Sunday schools and church halls.

2.   The proposal that deductions be allowed for gifts to finance the erection of the church buildings mentioned in the question will again be examined by the Government in conjunction with the Budget to be presented later this year.
