Mr Duthie e, asked the Minister representing the Minister for Civil Aviation, upon notice -

1.   Has the Government received a recent request from a French airline to allow it to pick up passengers in Brisbane and Sydney en route to New Caledonia and other Pacific islands?

2.   Are any other airlines operating to the Pacific destinations served' by this French airline?

3.   Has the Government refused the request; if so, why?

Mr Townley - The Minister for Civil Aviation has furnished the following reply:-

1.   No. A French airline has been operating an air service for many years through Australia to New Caledonia, making calls at Brisbane, where it is entitled to pick up and set down passengers and other traffic. I understand also that T.A.I, is establishing a new service from New Caledonia through Fiji to Tahiti which will connect at New Caledonia with T.A.I.'s service through Australia.

2.   Qantas operates an air service from Australia to New Caledonia as well as a service through Fiji to North America. The New Zealand airline T.E.A.L. also operates a service from New Zealand through Fiji to Tahiti.

3.   See answer to 1 above.
