Mr Cairns s asked the Minister representing the Minister for National Development, upon notice -

1.   What was the total amount of subsidy granted under the Petroleum Search Subsidy Act during the financial year 1957-58, and how much has been allocated for the current financial year?

2.   To what companies or individuals was subsidy paid?

3.   How much has been paid to each recipient?


Mr Townley - The Minister for National Development has replied as follows: -

1.   For the financial year 1957-58, the sum of £300,000 was provided by the Commonwealth Government to subsidize drilling for stratigraphic information. Of this sum £263,634 2s. 3d. was actually paid in the form of subsidy. The amount allocated for the current financial year is £500,000.

2.   Subsidy was paid to West Australian Petroleum Proprietary Limited in respect of drilling operations at Samphire Marsh, Western Australia, and to Australasian Petroleum Company Proprietary Limited in respect of drilling operations at Puri, Papua. Other companies to qualify for subsidy were Papuan Apinaipi Petroleum Company Limited, Associated Australian Oilfields No Liability, and Clarence River Basin Oil Exploration No Liability in respect of drilling operations at Kaufana, Papua; Karumba, Queensland, and Woomera, South Australia, respectively.

3.   In the year ended 30th June, 1958, subsidy amounting to £63,634 2s. 3d. was paid to West Australian Petroleum Proprietary Limited, for the Samphire Marsh operations, and £200,000 to Australasian Petroleum Company Proprietary Limited in respect of the Puri operations. In addition, the following amounts were outstanding at 30th June:-

Papuan Apinaipi Petroleum Company Limited. -Kaufana- £18,730.

Associated Australian Oilfields No Liability. - Karumba - £10,000.

Clarence River Basin Oil Exploration No Liability. - Woomera - £4,000.

A statement on the administration of the Petroleum Search Subsidy Act 1957-1958 will be tabled before Parliament rises.
