Mr Ward d asked the Postmaster-General, upon notice -

1.   ls it a fact that shortly after his retirement from the position of Director-General of Posts and Telegraphs, Sir Giles Chippindall became a director of Telephone and Electrical Industries Proprietary Limited, Faraday Park, Meadowbank, New South Wales?

2.   Has this firm secured orders of considerable value in recent years for the supply of equipment to the Postmaster-General's Department?

3.   If so, will the Minister supply information as to the value of the equipment supplied to the Postmaster-General's Department or any other government department by this company in each of the last five years?


Mr Davidson - The answers to the honorable member's questions are as follows: -

1.   Yes.

2.   Yes. In 1948 under the Chifley Government the Post Office entered into an arrangement covering a period of ten years with Standard Telephones and Cables Proprietary Limited, and Telephone and Electrical Industries Proprietary Limited, for the manufacture in Australia of some automatic telephone switching equipment for departmental use. With the agreement of the Department of the Treasury, this arrangement has since been extended up to 30th June, 1963.

3.   The value of the equipment supplied to the department in each cf the last five years was -

 

This included apparatus covered by the arrangement as well as equipment supplied on the basis of competitive tenders. The value of the equipment supplied to other Commonwealth and State Departments is not known but it would be small in relation to Post Office purchases.
