Mr Whitlam m asked the Minister representing the Minister for National Development, upon notice -

1.   What portion of the advance to each State under the Housing Agreement in 1956-57 and 1957-58 did the Minister specify should be set aside to erect dwellings for allotment to serving members of the forces?

2.   What portion of the advance in 1958-59 has he specified should be so set aside?

3.   How many houses in each State were commenced and completed in 1956-57 and 1957-58, and are expected to be commenced and completed in 1958-59, from the funds so set aside?


Mr Townley (DENISON, TASMANIA) (Minister for Supply) - The Minister for National Development has replied as follows: -

1.   The amounts specified by tie Minister to be set aside by each State in 1956-57 and 1957-58 for the erection of dwellings for allotment to serving members of the forces are shown below: -

2.   The amounts for 1958-59 have not yet been specified for all States but the following programme is proposed: -

 

3.   The funds set aside by the States for the erection of dwellings for allotment to serving members of the Forces are matched by supplementary advances by the Commonwealth, with the result that the funds available for this purpose are double the amounts set aside by the States. The numbers of Housing Agreement dwellings commenced and completed from the funds so available for allotment to serving members of the forces in 1956-57 and 1957-58 were as follows: - lt is expected that 168 dwellings commenced but not completed at 30th June, 1958, will be completed during 1)58-59. In addition it is expected that the following number of dwellings will be erected in 1958-59: -
