Mr Luchetti (MACQUARIE, NEW SOUTH WALES) i asked the acting Minister for Trade, upon notice -

1.   What was the total value of iron and steel products exported from Australia and to what countries .were they despatched, during the year ended on 30th June, 1958?

2.   What was the total value of iron and steel imports, and their country of origin, during the same year?


Mr Townley - The answers to the honorable member's questions are as follows: - (The following details concerning imports and exports to and from Australia during the year ended on 30th June, 1958, are taken from statistics prepared by the Bureau of Census and Statistics. The figures include iron and steel in crude form such as ingots, blooms, slabs and billets, as well as basic shapes of iron and steels, e.g., plate, bar. strip, angle, pipes and tubes, etc., but excludes ores of iron and steel.)

1.   The total value of iron and steel exported during 1957-58 was £21,196,409. Principal exports - equal to 76 per cent, of the total - were made to the following countries: -

 

The remaining 24 per cent, of the total was exported to 59 other countries.

2.   The total value of iron and steel imported during 1957-58 amounted to £21,866,732 f.o.b. Principal imports- equal to 92 per cent, of this total - came from the following countries: -

 

The remaining 8 per cent, of the total was imported from 16 other countries.

Should the honorable member require further detail in respect of any country not named, I would be pleased to let him have that detail.
