Mr Ward d asked the Minister for the Interior, upon notice -

1.   In respect of each of the dwellings which it is proposed to erect in Canberra for high ranking personnel of the Defence Department, what is the (a) floor area, (b) number of rooms and (c) final cost?

2.   What is the (a) total number of these dwellings at present planned and (b) their total cost?

3.   What are the details of any special features of these houses?


Mr Fairhall - The answers to the honorable member's questions are as follows: - 1. (a) Floor area - Twelve houses each 1,650 square feet plus 250 square feet for garage; five houses each 1,820 square feet plus 250 square feet for garage; one house 1,925 square feet plus 250 square feet for garage.

(b)   Number of rooms - Twelve three-bedroom houses, each six rooms exclusive of bathroom, laundry and toilet facilities; five four-bedroom houses, each seven rooms exclusive of bathroom, laundry and toilet facilities; one five-bedroom house, eight rooms exclusive of bathroom, laundry and toilet facilities.

(c)   Cost of each house type estimated at - Three-bedroom, £8,570 (including garage and store); four-bedroom, £9,313 (including garage and store); five-bedroom, £9,755 (including garage and store). 2. (a) Total number of dwellings at present planned is eighteen, (b) Total cost, £158,295.

3.   Features are - (a) Garage; (b) separate shower and toilet in addition to bathroom; (c) steps and garden walls; (d) slow combustion stove; (e) additional cupboards in proportion to the size of the houses; (f) hot-water system.
