Mr BRUCE (Flinders) (Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Customs) . - When this matter was discussed previously the Government held very strongly and definitely the view that it was undesirable to apply the higher rate of duty to redwood. The honorable member for Boothby was one of the few who supported the Government when it suffered a severe reverse in a division on the item. The intention of Parliament may not have been clear to the honorable member, but the committee generally understood that redwood referred to Californian redwood and that Baltic timber covered red and white pine.

Mr Duncan-Hughes - Is there any evidence of that?

Mr BRUCE - I do not know that there is any evidence other than my assurance.
