Mr PARKHILL (Warringah) . - Unfortunately, I was absent from this chamber when the duty on Oregon was debated last year. That timber is not produced in Australia, and there is no adequate substitute for it; it must bc used in all classes of buildings, including the dwellings of the poor. The Tariff Board, after examining about 100 witnesses, declined to recommend the imposition of a duty upon it, and that fact is referred to iu the last report of the board. I realize that it is useless to .attempt to reopen the matter at this stage, but I enter my emphatic protest against the imposition of a duty which means an increase in the cost of the people's dwellings.
