Mr FORDE asked the Postmaster-

General, upon notice -

1.   How many temporary telegraphists are employed by the Postmaster-General's Department in Australia, and of these, (a) how many are employed in each State, and (b) how many are returned soldiers?

2.   Is it a fact that it is the department's intention to dismiss all these men, irrespective of their past services?

3.   How many temporary telegraphists were dismissed during the year 1927-28, and how many of them are returned soldiers?

4.   Can arrangements be made to appoint the most efficient and experienced of these temporary telegraphists to the permanent staff, in view of the fact that they have been employed by the department for some years, and will now find it very difficult to get other employment ?
