Mr HILL - The answers to the honorable member's questions are as follow: -

1.   No. The proposal was first referred to the Public Works Committee on 6th December, 1921.

2.   According to evidence given before the Public Works Committee the population in 1921, was 14,424, and in 1927, 26,610.

3.   Yes. The Public Works Committee, after taking evidence in 1922, recommended that the work be put in hand. The Postal Department, as a result of certain developments subsequently decided, with the concurrence of the Public Works Committee, to defer the project. The work was again referred to the Public Works Committee on 22nd August, 1927, for further investigation in the light of considerable improvements in automatic equipment since 1921. The committee recommended that this proposal be proceeded with.

4.   Funds have been authorized and the necessary action is being taken with a view to the work being carried out with all expedition.
