Mr BURCHELL (FREMANTLE, WESTERN AUSTRALIA) asked the Minister of Trade and Customs, upon notice -

Whether he has seen the reports in the daily press relative to the slackening of passenger trade between England and America, with its consequential surplus of shipping tonnage. Further, has he seen the proposal to alter these vessels to render them suitable for cargo carrying. In view of the great difficulty experienced by shippers to and from Australia in securing sufficient steamers to convey their products to oversea markets, will he represent to the Imperial authorities how greatly Australia would appreciate the alteration of these vessels as proposed ?
