Mr SYDNEY SMITH (MACQUARIE, NEW SOUTH WALES) (Postmaster-General) - The answers to the honorable and learned member's questions are as follow : -

1.   Yes. Lumley, from 28th November, 1903, to 26th July, 1904 ; and Knight, from 22nd February, 1904 (still employed}.

2.   Yes.

3.   No special rates of pay have been determined by the Public Service Commissioner for temporary telegraphists; the salaries of those permanently employed are from ^40 to £160 in the 5th Class. It is, however, the intention of the Postmaster-General that in future the minimum salary of £110 per annum shall be paid in such cases as those referred to.

I may add that when I found that these two men, who were married, and had large families, and were expert at their work, were receiving only £90 per annum, I felt that I should be perfectly justified in paying them the minimum salary.
