Mr BATCHELOR - The position the Department has taken up is that any moneys granted to the police in connexion with the election must be paid for direct services only, and not for those rendered by the police in the ordinary way. The Government have paid over to the State authorities, a certain sum for the remuneration of the police officials who rendered direct services. That amount has been paid by the Police Department into the State Treasury, and is being held there pending a decision as to how it is to be allocated. So far as the Federal Government are concerned, they can recognise only direct services.
