5       Election of President

The Leader of the Government in the Senate (Senator Cormann), addressing the Clerk, reminded the Senate that the time had come for the Senate to choose one of its members to be President.

Senator Cormann proposed Senator the Honourable Scott Ryan to the Senate for its President and moved—That Senator Ryan take the chair of the Senate as President.

The Leader of the Australian Greens (Senator Di Natale) proposed Senator Nick McKim to the Senate for its President and moved—That Senator McKim take the chair of the Senate as President.

Senators Ryan and McKim addressed the Senate.

The Senate proceeded to a ballot.

The Clerk reported the result as follows:

Senator McKim: 10 votes

Senator Ryan: 63 votes

and declared Senator Ryan elected as President.

The President thanked the Senate for the honour conferred upon him and took the chair. He was congratulated by Senator Cormann, the Leader of the Opposition in the Senate (Senator Wong) and Senator Di Natale).

Suspension of sitting : At 11.28 am the sitting of the Senate was suspended till the ringing of the bells.

 

 

The sitting of the Senate resumed.

Senator Cormann informed the Senate that His Excellency the Governor-General would receive the President and senators in the Members’ Hall immediately.

Suspension of sitting : At 2.25 pm the sitting of the Senate was suspended till 3 pm.

 

 

The sitting of the Senate resumed.
