MINISTER FOR HUMAN SERVICES AND HEALTH--WESTERN AUSTRALIAN ROYAL
COMMISSION--FINDINGS

Suspension of standing orders: The Leader of the Opposition in the

Senate (Senator Hill), pursuant to contingent notice, moved--That so

much of the standing orders be suspended as would prevent Senator Hill

moving a motion to provide for the consideration of a matter, namely a

motion to give precedence to a motion relating to the Minister for Human

Services and Health (Dr Lawrence) and the findings of the Western

Australian Royal Commission on the Easton matter.

Debate ensued.

Question put and passed.

Senator Hill moved--That a motion relating to the Minister for Human

Services and Health (Dr Lawrence) and the findings of the Western

Australian Royal Commission on the Easton matter may be moved

immediately and have precedence over all other business today till

determined.

The Leader of the Australian Democrats (Senator Kernot) moved the

following amendment:

At end of motion add ", but that the question on the motion be put at

the expiration of two hours or at the end of the debate, whichever is

the earlier."

Question--That the amendment be agreed to--put and passed.

Main question, as amended, put and passed.

Senator Hill moved--That the Senate calls on the Prime Minister (Mr

Keating) to show national leadership by removing the Minister for Human

Services and Health (Dr Lawrence) following the findings of the Marks

Royal Commission that she lied and otherwise acted improperly.

Debate ensued.

Time expired: Debate on the motion reached the limit of 2 hours.

Leave was granted for Senator Chamarette to conclude her remarks and for

Senator Harradine to speak in the debate.
