PUBLIC WORKS--JOINT STATUTORY COMMITTEE--INQUIRY

Senator Reid, pursuant to notice of motion not objected to as a formal

motion, moved--That the Senate--

(a) notes that:

(i) there is presently before the Parliamentary Standing

Committee on Public Works an inquiry into the proposal

for the construction of the national headquarters for

the Department of the Environment,Sport and Territories

at Barton, Australian Capital Territory,

(ii) the proposal for construction of the building in the

Barton area is designed to transfer public servants

from Civic to Barton,

(iii) for some years now a policy refusing permission for

additional public servants to be located in Civic has

existed, and

(iv) the policy of removing public servants and not removing

the restriction locating public servants in Civic will

add further to the run-down of Civic; and

(b) calls on the Government to halt the Public Works Committee

inquiry at least until the ban on locating public servants in

Civic has been lifted and consideration has been given to the

needs of the various town centres for employment prospects.

(Senator Bolkus) and Senators Reid and Burns, by leave, made statements

relating to the motion.
