PETITIONS

The following 5 petitions, lodged with the Clerk by the Senators

indicated, were received:

Senators Sandy Macdonald and West, from 286 and 373 petitioners,

respectively, requesting that the Senate oppose legislation that would

jeopardise the freedoms and rights of schools and religious

institutions or force them to compromise their distinctive moral

values.

Senator McGauran, from 49 petitioners requesting that the Senate

disallow the Public Service Act regulation removing the right of

appeal against higher duties of 12 months or less duration.

Senator McGauran, from 18 petitioners requesting that the Senate take

action to ensure that substantial overseas aid is provided for

training programs for clearing landmines, and urge the Government to

use international forums to promote the Inhumane Weapons Convention

and prohibit landmines.

Senator McGauran, from 15 petitioners requesting that the Senate take

action to address the problem of illegal drug use in Australia by

educating young people and introducing tougher laws for drug

traffickers.
