FOREIGN AFFAIRS--EAST TIMOR

Senator Bourne, pursuant to notice of motion not objected to as a formal

motion, moved--That the Senate--

(a) notes that 16 October 1995 marks the twentieth anniversary of

the killing of 5 journalists, including 2 Australian citizens,

after Indonesian forces entered the village of Balibo in East

Timor;

(b) notes the recent admission by the former Governor of East Timor,

Mr Guilherme Concalves, that claims that the journalists

accidentally died in crossfire between opposing Timorese

factions were invented by Indonesian officials in order to

appease Australia; and

(c) calls on the Australian Government to request that Indonesian

authorities thoroughly investigate the circumstances under which

the journalists were killed.
