DISCUSSION OF MATTER OF PUBLIC IMPORTANCE

The Acting Deputy President (Senator Colston) informed the Senate that

Senator Gibson had proposed that the following matter of public

importance be submitted to the Senate for discussion:

That as a result of the Keating Government's disastrous mismanagement

of the economy, as evidenced by massive foreign and domestic debt,

Australianshave been forced to pay unnecessarily high interest rates

on all borrowings, including home mortgages.

The proposal was supported by 4 Senators and the matter was discussed.
